we are thinking with our hands

A new phase of be able started in April 2012 with "wir sind Handdenker", an interdisciplinary semester project at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee. Since be able had been such a success in the ceramic workshop, it seemed logical to try it in other fabricating sheltered workshops as well. As there are eighteen institutions for sheltered workshops in Berlin, it was not hard to find new partners. At the Kunsthochschule Professor Helmut Staubach from Product Design and Professor Zane Berzina from Textile and Surface Design agreed to lead the project with me and Melinda Barth also joined to work on the Project. Over the course of 3 months we guided a team of ten students who worked in five different workshops: a carpentry workshop, a bookbinding workshop, a candy workshop, a candle workshop and a textile workshop. The semester project ended with an exhibition at the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz which was accompanied by a workshop program for different target groups. We are currently working on bringing the new product ideas into production. There will be stitched candles, colourful books that make use of cut-off waste materials in beautiful patterns, a memory game using your own drawings and lollipops with surprising forms for new sensations in the mouth.
